Noun phrase complexity and contiguity in a Papuan language

چکیده
Abstract This article considers NP complexity and discontinuity in the Papuan language Coastal Marind. First, I give an overview of structure language, which is characterized by extremely limited possibility elaboration modification. connect this to observation that languages are exceptionally simple structures. The lack research makes it difficult evaluate significance such observations, but suggest Marind example a imposes very strict upper boundaries on complexity. Second, while argument could be made NPs allow considerable discontinuity, more thorough consideration facts reveals fundamental, tight-knit, left-branching structure, contrasts with relatively rarely employed looser nominal configurations, including discontinuous expressions. construals restricted primarily information structure. Although considered grammatical speakers, they rare corpus data. propose aboutness important factor constraining choice construal types discourse.

Noun-Phrase Model and Natural Query Language
Basic considerations in designing a natural data base query language system are discussed. The notion of the noun-phrase data model is elaborated, and its role in making a query system suitable for general use is stressed. An experimental query system, Yachimata, embodying the concept, is described.
متن کاملProcessing Complexity in Subjacency Violations: The Complex Noun Phrase Constraint∗
We may make an intuitive judgment that some linguistic expression is odd or deviant. But we cannot in general know, pretheoretically, whether this deviance is a matter of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, belief , memory limitations, style, etc. [Chomsky (1977:4)] 1 Introduction At least since the pioneering work of Chomsky and Miller (1963), it has been generally agreed within discussions of gram...
متن کاملEffects of noun phrase type on sentence complexity
A series of self-paced reading time experiments was performed to assess how characteristics of noun phrases (NPs) contribute to the difference in processing difficulty between objectand subject-extracted relative clauses. Structural semantic characteristics of the NP in the embedded clause (definite vs. indefinite and definite vs. generic) did not influence the magnitude of the processing diffi...
متن کاملNoun Phrase Translations for Cross-Language Document Selection
This paper presents results for the CLEF interactive CrossLanguage Document Selection task at the UNED. Two translations techniques were compared: the standard Systran translations provided by CLEF organizers as baseline, and a phrase-based pseudo-translation approach that uses a phrase alignment algorithm based on comparable corpora. The hypothesis being tested was that noun phrase translation...
متن کاملClarifying Noun Phrase Semantics
Abstract Reprise questions are a common dialogue device allowing a conversational participant to request clarification of the meaning intended by a speaker when uttering a word or phrase. As such they can act as semantic probes, providing us with information about what meaning can be associated with word and phrase types and thus helping to sharpen the principle of compositionality. This paper ...
